„Scale Clean“ — descaling powder in single-dose sachets

Citric acid descaler for small domestic espresso machines. 12 × 25 g sachets per box.

„Scale Clean“ is a descaling powder made in Italy by „REPA“ that keeps the machine’s water passages clear and coffee and tea tasting clean. It dissolves calcium and magnesium deposits; one 25 g sachet makes 1.5 litres of solution, enough to descale a machine once.

The main active ingredient is citric acid (60–80 %). The product is a white, water-soluble powder that removes scale effectively yet acts more gently than strong acids, so it also suits aluminium, copper, brass and iron surfaces.

Applications

• Small domestic espresso machines with a water tank, and their parts.
• Drinks dispenser circuits.

Directions for use

Dosage. Dissolve the contents of one sachet (25 g) in 1.5 litres of water.

1. Pour the solution into the machine's water tank.
2. Remove the portafilter (if fitted), place a large container under the group head and run the pump as if making coffee. Let 2–3 cups of solution flow out — watch out for splashes.
3. Repeat every 2–3 minutes until the tank is empty.
4. Rinse the tank, fill it with about 1.5 litres of clean water and run the water through until the tank is empty.

If the group head is blocked with scale, open the steam valve (if fitted) before step 2, run the pump and let about two cups of solution flow out.

Leave aluminium parts in the solution for up to 15–20 minutes.

Descale every 80–100 cups of coffee (usually once a month), or sooner when the coffee starts to flow more slowly; how often depends on water hardness and how heavily the machine is used. If the machine’s instructions specify a different descaling procedure, follow them.

Safe use

Warning: causes serious eye irritation (H319). Wear eye or face protection and wash your hands thoroughly after handling. If in eyes: rinse cautiously with water for several minutes; remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do, and continue rinsing. If eye irritation persists, get medical advice and have the pack or label at hand. Keep out of reach of children. Do not mix with other products, and do not transfer the powder to another container — it could be mistaken for food. Store only in the original, tightly closed pack in a well-ventilated place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
